Origin of contemporary furniture
Modern furniture refers to furniture produced from the late 19th century through the present that is influenced by modernism (source: Wikipedia). We are going to review how modern style of furniture has emerged since then. Throughout the 19th century, communications had improved, and the large international fairs of Paris, London, Philadelphia and Chicago had meant more sharing of ideas was possible than ever before. New furniture materials, such as plastics, plywood and tubular metal, were introduced, and two main directions appeared; the Arts & Crafts Movement's interest in line was developed in England and America, then elsewhere in Europe there was a move towards the decorative swirls, of Art Nouveau. The successors of these two were encompassed in the eclectic Art Deco era which peaked in 1925 and was later replaced by post-war functionalism, moving on through the 20th century into increasingly streamlined, minimal furniture designs.
